Few phrases cause more worry than "black mold." Search it online and you'll find plenty of alarming claims — some accurate, many exaggerated. At Elliot Environmental, our job is to cut through that noise: give you an honest assessment of what you actually have, and remove it safely if it needs removing. No scare tactics, no selling you work you don't need.

The truth is that many dark-colored molds are lumped together as "black mold," and not all of them are the toxic kind people fear. What they do have in common is that they grow where there's chronic moisture — and that's the real issue to address. We treat black mold with the same disciplined process we use for any mold: look at it honestly, contain it, remove it safely, and stand behind the work.

  • Dark black or greenish-black growth, often slimy
  • Growth following a leak, flood, or long-term dampness
  • A strong musty odor in the affected area
  • Health symptoms that ease when you leave the home
  • Mold on drywall, wood, or other damp organic surfaces

What "black mold" really means

The term usually refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, a dark greenish-black mold that tends to grow on very damp, cellulose-rich materials like drywall and wood after prolonged water exposure. But plenty of other common molds also look dark, and homeowners understandably can't tell them apart by sight. That's exactly why an honest inspection matters more than a Google image search.

What we won't do is use the word "toxic" to frighten you into a big invoice. What we will do is tell you plainly what we find, whether it warrants concern, and what it will take to resolve. Sometimes the answer is a straightforward remediation; sometimes it's "this is minor, here's how to keep it from spreading." Either way, you get the truth.

How we remove black mold safely

Regardless of species, dark mold from a real moisture problem gets our full remediation process. We contain the area and set up negative air pressure so that disturbing the mold — which is exactly when it releases the most spores — doesn't contaminate the rest of your home. Our technicians work in proper protective equipment, because doing this safely protects both your household and our crew.

Affected materials are removed, and surfaces are treated and HEPA-cleaned to capture the fine spores ordinary cleaning leaves behind. This is precisely the kind of job you don't want to tackle yourself: scrubbing black mold without containment sends spores throughout the house and can make the problem bigger than when you started. Safe removal is methodical, contained, and thorough.

Remove it safely, then stand behind it

Black mold is a moisture story like every other mold, usually tied to a significant or long-standing water problem — a leak that went unnoticed, a chronically damp basement, or flooding that wasn't fully dried. We'll tell you what we see that's feeding it so you can have it addressed — a dry space is what keeps it from returning.

When the work is done, we walk you through it, document what was removed, and back the remediation with a 10-year warranty. If you want independent lab verification — for peace of mind, a sensitive household, or a real estate transaction — we don't do testing ourselves, but we're glad to work alongside an independent testing company. That combination of safe removal, documentation, and a warranty is how you put a black mold worry behind you for good.

Don't panic — but don't wait

The right response to suspected black mold sits between the two extremes we usually see. Panic isn't warranted — a dark spot is not an emergency, and the internet's worst-case stories rarely match reality. But ignoring it isn't wise either, because whatever is feeding that growth is an active moisture problem that will keep spreading and keep damaging your home the longer it sits.

The sensible middle path is simple: get it looked at. A quick, honest consultation tells you whether you're dealing with something that needs a full remediation or something minor you can manage. Either way, you replace worry with facts. That's the whole reason we lead with straight talk on black mold — an informed homeowner makes a good decision, while a frightened one often overpays for work they may not need. We'd much rather earn your trust than exploit your fear.

How we work

Our process — safe, contained, and documented

Every job runs on the same playbook: find it, contain it, remove it, and stand behind it.

  1. 1

    Honest assessment

We assess what you actually have — not every dark mold is the toxic kind — and tell you straight whether it warrants concern.

  2. 2

    Full containment

Black mold is removed under containment and negative air so spores don't spread during the work, with technicians in proper PPE.

  3. 3

    Safe removal

Affected materials are removed and surfaces are treated and HEPA-cleaned to capture the fine spores ordinary cleaning misses.

  4. 4

    Document & warranty

We document what was removed, tell you what we saw feeding it, and back the work with our 10-year warranty.

Common questions

Black Mold Removal FAQs

No. Many molds look dark but aren't the species people worry about. An inspection tells you what you actually have — we don't use the word 'toxic' to sell work.

It's not recommended. Disturbing it without containment releases spores throughout the home and can spread the problem. Safe removal uses containment, PPE, and HEPA filtration.

We remove it under containment, HEPA-clean the area, document the work, and back it with a 10-year warranty. If you'd like independent lab verification, we're glad to work alongside a third-party testing company — we don't do testing ourselves.

Prolonged moisture on damp, cellulose-rich materials — from an unnoticed leak, chronic dampness, or flooding that wasn't fully dried. Keeping the area dry afterward is essential to keeping it gone.

Significant indoor mold is worth addressing, especially for sensitive individuals, but the online fear is often overstated. We'll give you an honest read on your specific situation rather than a worst-case sales pitch.
